Balboa Peninsula in Newport Beach may not be the first place that comes to mind when looking for affordable vintage jewelry that feels uniquely one of a kind. I have hunted through Pasadena's famed Rose Bowl, Santa Monica's Vintage Expo, and numerous NYC street fairs and was shocked, and truly thrilled, when I found the statement making and affordable collection I had been searching for was right in my own backyard on 32nd Street at Melia's. The wide open shop is in transition from being a clothing store with a bit of vintage jewelry to a vintage jewelry store with a bit of clothing, and has already convinced me that this was is a stellar plan. Husband and wife team, Melia and Ben, are really playing to their strengths with the direction of the new store, and Melia's father, a fine jeweler, has made some vintage discoveries I am still dreaming about.

I happened upon Melia's before they opened one day, and through the window I found myself enamored with an ornate and elegant looking silver and onyx necklace that would surely transform any look from ready to wear to regal. My window shopping forced me to imagine a price for this kind of piece, and having recently fallen in love with its twin priced at $3000 in an airport (I know, I shop everywhere), I had a feeling it would also have a giant price tag. As I walked around the block and waited for the 11am to roll around, I caught myself creating look after look in my mind, all featuring the necklace I was now in LOVE with from Melia's. When they opened, I strolled in casually, I couldn't let them know I had been dying to come in, and I circled the necklace like a bird does its prey. I looked at absolutely everything in the store before even allowing this amazing necklace to know I was interested. I was dazzled by perfect with a tee daytime rhinestones, delicate and demure vintage coin purses, rows and rows of Navajo sterling and turquoise squash blossoms I had once hunted for in New Mexico and never found...again, found right here in the OC. Just when I knew the necklace had given up on me, I went in for the kill. Melia brought it down off of it's pedestal and clasped it around my neck...and as I admired it's beauty from every angle, I asked what the damage would be...the boutiquing gods were seriously on my side, because this best in show bauble was a doable $200...AND it was 50% off...so, $100!!!!! Here I am, smiling in my steal of a vintage piece....

This discovery made me realize that although all of the pieces at Melia's LOOK like a million bucks, they most certainly don't cost that. Their prices start at $10, and go up to $2000, but the

bulk of the collection is well under $300 (especially during their July and December sales, when much of the store is 50% off). It is obvious that they buy with an eye for the current trends in vintage, but their passion is in the organic and raw beauty of turquoise and natural stone. I noticed the subtle lean toward green in this boutique, from the back wall color, to the recycling of estate jewelry, to the commitment to make all of their packaging and bags earth friendly. After my experience at Melia's I am even more convinced by how much I love my job...although maybe I should have kept this boutiquing gold mine to myself...these pieces ARE all one of a kind...well okay, you can go too...but don't forget to tell them boutiquing sent you! Bellabacci means "Beautiful Kisses" in Italian, and whether you speak the language or not, you'll feel the jewelry love overflowing in this Laguna Beach Boutique. Don't come looking for subtle or dainty, Bellabacci is home to the strikingly bold and brilliant world of rings, headbands, handbags, necklaces, bracelets and earrings! From watches to clothing, the amount of inventory that moves through Bellabacci is shocking when you see how small the store is, but don't let the small size fool you ;) Coupled with an international website, Bellabacci is the number one retailer for a majority of their famous designer lines. What does this mean for you...stop by frequently because 1 - they are the first to get the newest styles, often before any other boutique, and 2 - they sell out quickly!

Looking to stand out in the fashion landscape? Bellabacci is known for their super abundance of rebelliously romantic and ornate glittery inventions from the creative mind of Tarina Tarantino. Be sure to find jewelry, accessories and handbags from the flamboyant mistress of the fashion, Betsy Johnson. Betsey Johnson's ability to combine the outrageous with frilly femininity mixed with Bellabacci's numerous choices will no doubt have you playing adult "dress up".

A recent jewelry love of fashion magazines like ELLE, Lucky, InStyle and Vanity Fair, Elizabeth Cole signature pieces are "meant to inspire the golden tigress within". With gold chains, charms, antique zodiac and money coin combinations... I feel in love with this jewelry line, perfect for wearing individually or layering.

One of the "perks" of boutiquing (something you rarely find in chain retail locations), is you get to hear straight from the owner the intricate details of each line and interesting info about the designers. Owners Frank and Kelly Mancini have an eye for picking the hottest designs and love to share the experience with their clients. One of my favorite memories as a little girl was playing in my Grandmothers gigantic jewelry chest full of gem tone necklaces, antique brooches, gaudy earrings, enormous rings and chiffon scarves. Walking into The Black Flamingo immediately took me back to those days but in this memory Betsey Johnson and Roberto Cavalli are my grandparents. The Black Flamingo is the perfect amount of vintage without feeling grandma-ish, in fact it is incredibly sexy vintage. Talk about color, daring sass and originality for the NOW.

Pastel glass trays lined with vintage rings, candy dishes overflowing with bracelets, racks hanging from the ceiling with blindingly bright colored clothes and skinny painted cupboards filled with vintage clutches had my eyes dancing with excitement. If you enjoy the hunt of uniqueness, flirty boho and scoring rare collectibles at flea markets you will go crazy at The Black Flamingo. It's obvious why they are labeled "Official Stylists of MTV's 'Laguna Beach - The Real OC'.

Located in Laguna across the street from the new Pottery Place (formerly the Pottery Shack) The Black Flamingo is set in a tiny house where the top floor displays the super sexy Lady Lux swimwear (see their fashion show at Club M), one of a kind bold patterned Black Flamingo Couture halter dresses (mini and maxi) designed by the owner Christy Pacella, floral silk blouses, DIY boho minis and unique jewelry from local designers. Walk down the narrow steps (I'm 5'8 and hit my head :) and you'll find the bottom floor has been turned into an adorable consignment boutique. Christy realized her customers still wanted to shop but needed an outlet to sell their splurges and get money for new clothes. (See her review in OCRegister) You'll find premium denim, jackets, dresses, vintage clothing, shoes and accessories at surprisingly affordable prices.

I found a dark pair of Seven for Mankind jeans for $49 and a black eyelet swing jacket lined with metallic gold for $45. And being the "A" I am, (take our quiz to see which style you are) I fell in love with a gold chain necklace with multi chain, painted tassel ends, that loops in the front of your neck like a scarf to clasp...I've never seen anything like it, nor will I ever again and it was only $19.outique

As if my obsession with super yummy Mike & Chris leather jackets wasn't bad enough, Elle H turned me onto their tops! April and I get a high when we learn about new designers, it's like a jolt of euphoria to our boutiquing veins and Rory Becca was that "hit" for me :) Vintage inspired, Rory Becca has perfectly blended the style of old with modern chic to make a very wearable yet memorable collection of tops and dresses perfect for a summer baby shower or dinner date.

So it's no secret, I'm a jewelry whore. I judge boutiques by their jewelry and Elle H got a perfect 10 from me. Their jewelry is well worth the money...unique, bold, eye catching and original were just a few of the happy thoughts that ran across my mind as I journeyed through a wide selection of earrings, necklaces, bracelets and rings. Thank God for tax returns because I HAD to splurge on a gorgeous pair of gold multi chain hoop style earrings from Chan Luu (watch how she went from immigrant to jewelry stylist to the stars on ABC) I literally wore the earrings out of the store and all night I couldn't pass a mirror without admiring them...told you I'm love struck!

Elle H offers a variety of denim, gorgeous purses including the vegan Japanesse line Matt & Nat (it's made out of rice paper!) and a wonderfully fresh sale rack full of amazing deals on coveted designers. I enjoyed the ample space and immaculate lighting in the fitting rooms, easy flow of the store, honest comments and helpful suggestions from Erica as I goo-gooed over every display.

One thing comes close to my love of eclectic fashion boutiques and that's a modern boutique hotel! I'm drawn to the clean lines, bold artwork, minimalist elegance and posh luxury that lingers in the air. Walking into the sleek Scout 3 felt like my two favorite worlds had been perfectly combined, white walls, shiny teal mosaic tiles, mod leather furniture, brushed metal fixtures and dark wood accents.

The same soothing feeling I get from an immaculately designed boutique hotel came over me as I searched through the colorfully merchandised floor of Scout 3. This boutique is where you want to go for trendy New York sophistication mixed with beachy everyday ease. Flirty dresses, boho chic sweaters, silk tops, cutting edge denim and figure flattering skirts drapped the racks with absolute beauty. I found a selection of always perfect jersey knit dresses from Rachael Pally, beautiful and seductive Paris inspired BGN, the fab feminine contemporary women's line Leifsdottir and the unique and sophisticated designs of UK designer Ted Baker,

Scout 3 has a memorable selection of jewelry displayed creatively on glossy rocks and pinto beans...random yes, but perfect, for every piece has a one of a kind story feel. I personally fell in love with a silver circle ring with small white pearls submerged in a shiny peach stone. Scout 3 carries beautiful scents from Christiane Celle, natural body lotions from Korres, candles, lacy intimates and a perfect blend of original home decor pieces and gift ideas.

Bring your man! Scout 3 has a subtly sexy section for the men delivering the same New York flare that naturally commands attention. He'll love Earnest Sewn and Ben Sherman, who prior to vacating, used to be one of my favorite boutiques at South Coast Plaza. Personally I couldn't stop starring a the straw fedora hats, short sleeve polos and fitted cotton jersey tees in muted grays and tans.

One of my all time favorite boutiquing spots is the well stocked and expertly edited Shopgirls boutique in Costa Mesa. My trip in today - complete with BOTH kids in tow, was surprisingly easy and even pleasant. Thank goodness for the play area and attentive staff for making this even remotely possible. I am impressed, excited, and overwhelmingly in approval of some of the most recent additions to Shopgirls stellar style repertoire. The simple yet stylish boutique focuses on quality over quantity and delivers the absolute best in unique and wearable designers.

I spotted a to die for dress by Catherine Malandrino, the largest array of basic black pants ever, and the perfect silk patterned blouses by Trina Turk and Joie to top them off. Stacks of stylish and flattering dark denim top the entry table and my favorite spot in this dependable boutique is the addition of the have to see it to believe line of custom furniture by Pal + Smith. The combination of bold pattern and color with traditional design would transform any corner of the house into something from Elle Decor.

As always, I had to spend some time inspecting the jewelry and Shopgirls certainly delivers in that department. Delicate and unique charm neckalces dangle from multiple branches and rhinestone earrings from tiny to ostentatious await an evening in the candlelight. Shades from Dita and great lingerie options from Plum Pretty Sugar and Hanky Panky round out this one stop shop. The biggest and best highlight of the store, the party dresses! Beautiful basic black to frothy metallic and brocade dazzlers by from Frock and Plenty by Tracy Reese, Trina Turk and Catherine Malandrino just need an invitation and a sassy pair of stilettos to make an entrance.

Queen Bee - Bold & Buzzworthy

My 11 month old son had the pleasure of joining me in my latest excursion to The Queen Bee Boutique in Newport Beach. Let me tell you, we were both like kids in a candy store. The minute we walked through the front door, we were both transfixed by the incredible mural of black and white faces covering the walls. It is truly something you must see in person. This boutique is a beautiful cross between Alice in Wonderland and an optical illusion by Escher.

See what I mean??? This place is unbelievably unique. The first thing (of many) that caught my eye, was a gorgeous display of fedoras and headbands. I seriously had to stop myself from trying ALL of them on. I was also impressed by the unique collection of designers in this boutique. There are amazing dresses from Anne Leman, silk tie dye shifts from Rory Beca, party girl pieces by La Rok, and a great array of denim by Alexander McQueen's line McQ. Also incredibly alluring, is the giant glass case of jewelry - I know - GLASS BAD...fell in love...should have walked away...didn't...ahhhh. The designer that found me was Pade Vavra - try on her amazing panther bracelet and tell me you don't feel a bit like Rachel Zoe.

I absolutely loved shopping in this jewel box of a boutique, and truly the best part was Jeremy, the knowledgeable, engaging, and creative shopguy working when I was in. It is obvious he loves fashion, and was able to tell me a complete background of all the designers I inquired about...that is rare and wonderful!

Another little bonus that did not go unnoticed - Queen Bee carries up to a size 10, not your typical boutique size run, and you just have to try something on there - the dressing rooms are quite a highlight! When the closet is in need of something totally unique and conversation starting, flit on over to Queen Bee, they will have the item with the "it" factor.

The owner, who comes from South America, is the first to bring the hidden Columbian lingerie treasure Touché to the West Coast. Touché includes delicately soft and seductive bras and panties, activewear and innovative silhouette swimsuits called “Balneaire” (A French adjective meaning bathing; seaside). This shop is a must stop for the boutiquer who enjoys an intimate affair with fashion without sacrificing comfort.

I found the hottest bathing suit styles of 2009 at Cielo including a little black and white polka dot cut-out monokini for $150. Anticipating the huge shipment of new suits this month, Cielo will ensure you are beach ready with sassy simplicity. Make sure you don't over look the soft kimono style cover-ups to match your perfect suit and the semiprecious gemstone necklaces by Tori Michaels that include a description of how each stone enhances your mood.

Mixed with the bordering ocean breeze, Cielo offers a delightful sensory experience with candles and fragrances by Apothia, the hip trendsetting line by Ron Robinson. My personal favorite was "Velvet Rope", a scent inspired by an icy cold, dry vanilla martini spiked with absolute jasmine and a twist of grapefruit...its super yummy on the skin! The travel size roll-on perfume is a great gift under $50.
